Winter means only one thing in the UK – wet, miserable weather. Rainy conditions can be tough to master for drivers, so be prepared. Here are our top tips for wet weather driving.
Check The Forecast
If a weather warning has been issued – yellow, amber or red – plan your journey well in advance to take it into account. When there’s a downpour, traffic slows – so factor this in or avoid travelling.
Keep Your Wipers Clean
Dirty wipers can be dangerous. All of the pollen, dust, insects, leaves and other detritus can stick to the rubber, and the rain can make it into a gloopy mess that smears across your window. Before you set off on a journey, it is a good idea to give your wiper blades a wipe with a damp rag or sponge. You can keep a suitable item in your car for such occasions. If, even after cleaning your wiper blades, you can’t see clearly, invest in a new set.
Wet Weather Driving
- Top up your windscreen washer fluid regularly. There’s no point in cleaning your wiper blades if you’re out of wiper fluid. Even in the rain, you may need the fluid to properly clean your windows. Try to get into the habit of topping up every couple of weeks and keep a bottle in the car.
- Check your lights work. During heavy rain, your headlights are sometimes the way that other vehicles can see your car. If you find you have blown a bulb, you’re putting yourself and others in danger. Test your lights regularly with the assistance of a friend and keep spare bulbs in the car – just in case.
- Check your tyres – Wet weather increases your car’s braking distance and your tyre tread is the only thing keeping you in contact with the road. Without the right tread depth, your car cannot clear water away and you could lose control.
