The Midlands and the North were most badly affected, the West Midlands had 11,506 thefts in 2019 and 2020 - more than any other regions.
On a smaller scale, Birmingham West was the place with the most vehicle thefts of in 2019 and 2020, although the 2020 figure of was still smaller than that in 2019. The data came from a freedom of information request by Compare The Market, and it showed that Liverpool was the place with the second most vehicle thefts in 2019/20 (2,338), and Sheffield was in third place (2,322).
It was not all bad news: The four top areas for thefts all saw decreases of reported crimes between 2019 and 2020. However, some other areas in the list - Doncaster, Sandwell, Rotherham and Coventry did have increases. The data also suggested that keyless car theft accounted for 93 per cent of all the thefts in 2020 – highlighting this as a growing area of concern when it comes to the development of car crime in the 21st century now that vehicle security has improved so much.
