Tough-looking 4x4s and SUVs are seen as amongst the safest cars on the road, but is that true?
There are big differences between the best and worst SUVs when it comes to safety. So, if you are looking to buy an SUV, which will keep you and your family safe?
Whilst rivals are more practical and nicer to drive, the Mercedes GLE has a great interior, and air suspension makes it a comfortable cruiser. Its whiplash protection is good, as well as its child occupant protection score – which is near the top in Euro NCAP testing.
Skoda’s small SUV is comfortable and easy to drive, well priced and roomy for its size. This all helped it achieve a high rating in the Euro NCAP test.
Seat's largest SUV is generously equipped, but not as versatile some alternatives. It still outscored its Skoda Kodiaq sister for occupant protection for both adults and children.
The Audi Q3 is great to drive and edges the Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC40 with its Euro NCAP rating.
The CX-30 is as luxurious as prestige brand SUVS, yet much cheaper to buy. It has outstanding protection for the driver and front-seat passenger, with a 99% rating in this area.
The RAV4 comes with a raft of safety equipment including automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane assistance and SOS emergency call. In Excel trim and above you get blind-spot monitoring too.
Subaru deserves its reputation for building rugged cars, with the Forester being rated as the safest SUV. It scores incredibly well for child protection and has a sophisticated driver monitoring system which uses facial recognition technology to warn you if your gaze wanders away from the road.
