Here are our favourite no-expense-spared cars.
As a brand Rolls-Royce is always top of the pile. Even at this level, there is a hierarchy: the Ghost, Wraith and Dawn all play second fiddle to the Phantom, with a physical stature that towers over every other car.
While Rolls-Royce flourishes under BMW, Bentley has been modernised by Volkswagen to appeal to a younger, richer audience. Continental GTs and Flying Spurs are built with tech shared with Porsche, Audi and others in the Volkswagen group and the old-school Mulsanne has now reached the end of the line.
Audi has a credibility gap before it can operate at the S-Class level. Mercedes’ offers gravitas for the rich and powerful, without attracting the kind of attention a Bentley or Rolls Royce brings. There is no lack of ambition in the A8 to move in the same circles so Audi has used marketing and chauffeur-driven A8s are now as common on London’s streets as Prius Ubers.
The luxury market is conservative. Volvo has ambitions to move upmarket and build products to suit its Chinese owners. Saloons carry status there so Volvo’s design language translates well, being imposing without straying into caricature. The S90 is a big car, sharing much of the S60, XC60 and XC90 SUVs’ mechanicals. The hybrid Twin Engine powertrain may be less sophisticated than its German rivals but it is efficient and powerful. Inside it is as fresh as any modern Volvo, with more luxurious finishing and detailing like Swedish flag upholstery tags and an Orrefors crystal gear selector.
