The government has made an announcement that as mandatory MOT tests will begin again from 1 August as lockdown restrictions, ease and traffic begins to rise. Find out more about the MOT extension ending…
MOT Extension Ending
A six-month extension to MOTs was brought in to discourage non-essential travel during the lockdown. The scheme was going to run until March 2021 but now ends at the end of this month. The extension will still apply to MOT certificates expiring prior to 1st August, but from then, drivers must have the test by the anniversary of their last MOT, as usual. The extension already granted remains still valid for those vehicles that have already been granted one – it applies to vehicles that have an MOT due to expire on or after 1st August 2020.
Why Has The Government Changed The Rules On MOT Extensions?
The change follows concerns from motoring organisations that the easing of lockdown measures and an increase in traffic on our roads could lead to more unsafe vehicles than ever before on our roads. Around one in three vehicles fail their MOT each year, so there could be 1.6 million unsafe vehicles driving around with valid MOTs.
