The 3 Series from German manufacturer BMW has been voted by a magazine’s readers as the best affordable car from the 1990s to buy today, confirming its long-standing position as one of the modern classics that best-balanced desirability and excellent value for money.
The poll was done by a magazine that focuses on low-cost iconic cars from the past, and its readers chose the BMWs E36 as its best buy. This particular 3-series model has grown in popularity in recent years as it not just a great car to drive, but its front engine and rear-wheel drive layout makes it a brilliant starting point for a track-day car conversion.
The 3 Series Beemer was followed in 2nd place by the Mazda’s MX-5 Roadster, which was an incredibly popular choice of an affordable sports car in the decade. The Mazda car just beat its rival at the time - the MGF – which came in third place. The next position went to the Jaguar XJ saloon, one of the most memorable luxury cars of the last thirty years.

A surprise entry at the last position in the top ten was Fiat’s Bravo and Brava hatchbacks – which shows there is still love for affordable 90s cars.
