The car magazine Auto Express has found and written about a great variation in the charges for battery replacement by garages in franchised dealer networks.
The publication’s mystery shoppers visited three dealerships for each of the car brands they tested to ask them to give a quote to supply and fit a replacement battery in a series of popular cars.
It found that some dealerships quoted a price that was up to three times as high as for the same job than the lowest quote from the dealers – and more than an independent garage such as Car Clinic MOT Centre.
A Mercedes-Benz dealer quoted the mystery shoppers £1,248 to change a battery on a Mercedes C-Class, compared to the lowest quote, which was £315.
Auto Express’s news editor Jonathan Burn led the mystery shop. He said: “The problem for British motorists is that the retail price of car parts is not regulated. There is very little transparency or consistency in pricing, even for garages within the same dealer networks.
Auto Express wrote that all three of the Toyota dealerships they contacted gave them a quote for the same amount to replace the battery on a Yaris, each charging £105.
For Vauxhall, the results were mixed. The variance was just £1.60 between the highest and lowest dealer quotes to replace an Astra battery, but the gap increased to £164.34 when quotes were sought for a Mokka X.
This goes to show why it is a good idea to always gather several quotes and to consider using an independent garage like MOT Car Centre.
