Freezing temperatures, slippery roads and darker nights… driving in the winter brings extra challenges. Read our guide to make winter journeys safer…
Make Winter Journeys Safer
What can you do to help your car overcome the winter roads?
Cold weather is a major cause of battery failure so keep an eye its condition in the winter. If you find your car needs a hand to get started, ensure you’ve got the right equipment: a jump-starting kit and a battery charger.
Tyres that are worn, underinflated or in poor condition struggle to grip on snow and ice – making these challenging conditions even more dangerous. You can check the condition of your tyres by looking for cuts, splits or nicks. A tyre inflator can get them back to the vehicle handbook pressures and a tyre depth gauge helps check your tread depth is above the legal minimum of 1.6mm.
You can’t stop snow and rain from falling but you can help keep your windscreen clear. Windscreen wipers keep your vision clear so they need to be in good working order. A quick visual check should show if yours need replacing.
Have you ever desperately tugged at the screenwash lever on a frosty day only for nothing to come out? It is easy to avoid this: all you need to do is purchase some good quality screenwash and it will prevent the water in the reservoir from freezing.
