Long Journey Planning Checklist

Have you got everything you need for a long journey in your car when lockdown restrictions are eased over Christmas? Here is our long journey planning checklist:

Long Journey Planning Checklist

Tyre Condition

Check your tyres’ conditions, paying particular attention to any cracks, bulges, or foreign objects embedded within them. If the tread depth on the tyres is not above the legal minimum (1.6mm across the central ¾ of the tyre all the way round), you could be fined and get 3 penalty points per tyre. You can check if they meet the standard with a 20p -  Simply put it in the groove. If the outer edge can be seen, you need a replacement tyre. Many experts recommend changing when tread depth gets down to 3mm.

Tyre Pressure

Under-inflated tyres may cause tyre blowouts, and these mean accidents at high speeds, which are extremely dangerous. Under or over-inflated tyres affect handling, braking and even your fuel consumption. The car’s handbook will list the right pressures, and you can test them using a handheld pressure gauge or at the petrol station.

Wheel Alignment and Balancing

If your steering wheel wobbles at high speed, your wheels may not be balanced. If your car veers to one side on straight roads your wheel alignment could be out. Come to Car Clinic for a check and repair.

Oil

Oil lubricates moving parts of the engine – running out means a big repair bill. To check the level, locate your dipstick, and pull out to see if the oil level falls between the markers. If you cannot tell clearly, wipe it with a clean cloth, then reinsert it and repeat.

Windscreen Wipers

Wipers get damaged and become less effective at clearing the windscreen over time. Check them for wear and tear, and replace them if necessary. Top up screenwash regularly.

Lights

It is essential for your lights to work. Check the brake lights, reverse lights, indicators, and headlights. It is quicker and easier if two people do this, so ask someone to watch while you use the brakes, engage reverse and test your indicators. Indicators will blink at double speed if a bulb has blown, so watch out for that.
