Getting To Know MOTs ... MOT stands for ‘Ministry of Transport’ and is used to refer to a test that applies to all cars over three years old. The annual test checks that a vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. It’s illegal to drive a car without a valid MOT, and you can be fined £1,000 if you are caught without one.
The MOT test lasts no more than an hour and looks at various aspects of the car. It is not a substitute for regular servicing and excludes the engine, clutch and gearbox.
It is carried out by a trained tester and includes an examination of the performance of the brakes, the headlamps, the fuel system, exhaust emissions, seatbelts, tyres, registration plates, and steering.
You can check the MOT history of a vehicle on the GOV.UK website. When you enter the car’s registration, it reveals all its tests (passes and fails), the mileage recorded, what parts failed and any minor problems. It also shows the date the next MOT is due.
You will be given a VT30 ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate’. It lists the reasons the car did not pass, and you have to address the issues listed on the certificate then present the car to be retested.
Only approved MOT test centres such as Car Clinic MOT Centre can give you a valid MOT. Look out for the official MOT logo, which is a blue sign with three white triangles in the centre.
You can sign up for annual MOT reminders for free on the GOV.UK website. All you need is the vehicle’s registration number and your e-mail address.
