All over the UK, millions of drivers will be taking to the road to get away for the Bank Holiday weekend. We have put together some top bank holiday driving safety tips to follow to try to avoid spoiling your day with a breakdown.
To improve the odds of arriving at your destination without breaking down here is some practical guidance:
- Walk around the car before you set off to check for possible problems, paying particular attention to your lights and tyres.
- Check all of the tread depths and pressures of your tyres. Don’t forget the spare wheel.
- Check all of the fluid levels are topped up.
- Make sure that you have breakdown cover.
- Keep a road atlas in the car so you can say where you are if you need to ring for assistance. Don’t rely on the maps on your mobile phone – you will not always have signal!
- Keep a handful of coins in the car in case you need to use a payphone.
- Check your phone battery is charged before you set off – and invest in an in-car charger for it.
- Write down your breakdown provider’s number and keep it in the car – as it will usually be on your certificate, keep that in your glove compartment.
- Buy one of the reflective red warning triangles and use it to warn oncoming drivers if you do break down.
- Put a bag with a set of warm clothes, a rug and chocolate in the boot – even the British Summer is often cold, and if you get stuck in traffic for a long time, a bottle of drinking water will be welcome.
