Mini: a British icon. Back in 2001, few would have predicted the German company BMW could reinvent the legendary icon and transform it into a luxurious, up-to-date car. Read our article on 20 years of Mini to find out more.
The relaunched Mini was a huge success, with the car becoming a smash hit all over again. Since the inception of the BMW Mini, it has evolved continuously. Here are some of the key models.
The first-generation BMW Mini captured the character of the original British car. First revealed at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show, it took the motoring world by storm thanks to a combination of retro looks and a classy interior. It helped that it was a great car to drive too!
The Mini Cooper S added a supercharger to the engine, giving the car significantly more power. It had a tighter suspension, and the bonnet air intake became a feature of all future sporty models.
In 2004, a Mini Convertible was launched, with enough space for four occupants, and a roof that neatly folded up behind the rear seats.
Mini began expanding its range of cars in 2007 with the introduction of the Clubman. With a new, estate car-like layout, it offered more space but still had the nimble handling and punchy engines of the original models.
The Paceman was a new Mini in 2013: combining the best features of an SUV and a hatchback in a three-door chassis. With the Mini range now up to seven cars, there was a Mini for everyone.
The third-generation Mini introduced a new, five-door variant with better rear legroom and a third seat in the rear.
In 2016 Mini’s first attempt at electrification was the Countryman Plug-in hybrid. It was the first electrified model from the brand, combining a three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor.
In 2020, Mini’s first full Electronic Vehicle arrived. With styling that was largely unchanged from the oil-burning models, the electric motor ensured it offered a zippy driving experience.
